Should You Change Directions When Mowing?
Varying the pattern in which you mow will help to allow the blades to grow straighter and healthier. Grass blades tend to grow in the direction in which they are mowed. Alternating the pattern allows the blades to return to a more upright position
In general, most lawns in Victoria require mowing every one to two weeks during the growing season, which typically runs from spring through autumn. During the winter months, when grass growth slows down, you can reduce the mowing frequency to once every three weeks depending on the rainfall, temperature and direct light on the lawn.
Cutting your grass too short, commonly known as scalping, can cause it to brown off and die during summer. Aim to leave the grass at least 5cm high in sunny areas to protect the roots and retain moisture.
There are a few simple lawn care tips that you can use to help get your lawn back on track. These include mowing your lawn regularly, fertilizing if you haven’t already recently and raking out dead plant material.
